House and Small Buildings candidates get span questions in two forms. Either you are given the member (species, grade, size, spacing) and asked for the maximum span, or you are given a span and asked for the smallest member or the widest spacing that works. Roof questions often hide a snow load calculation first, because the roof tables are entered by specified snow load, not by city. Beam and lintel questions add a supported length calculation, an interpolation, or a percentage adjustment from a table note.

The method

  1. Check the tables apply. Floor spans in Subsection 9.23.4. are only for residential live loads; anything heavier goes to Part 4 design (OBC Div. B 9.23.4.1.OBC Div. B 9.23.4.1. Application(1) Spans provided in this Subsection for joists, beams and lintels supporting floors shall apply only where (a) the floors serve residential areas as described in Table 4.1.5.3., or (b) the uniformly distributed live load on the floors does not exceed that specified for residential areas as described in Table…).
  2. Pick the table by member type. Article 9.23.4.2.OBC Div. B 9.23.4.2. Spans for Joists, Rafters and Beams(1) Except as required in Sentence (2) and Article 9.23.14.10., spans for wood joists and rafters shall conform to the spans shown in Span Tables 9.23.4.2.-A to 9.23.4.2-G for the uniform live loads shown in the Tables. (See Article 9.4.2.2.) (2) Spans for floor joists that are not selected from Span Tables… sends you to:
    • Floor joists: Table 9.23.4.2.-A (general cases, in three blocks: with strapping, with bridging, with strapping and bridging) or Table 9.23.4.2.-B (special cases: ceiling on wood furring, or concrete topping).
    • Ceiling joists, attic not reached by a stair: Table 9.23.4.2.-C.
    • Roof joists: Tables 9.23.4.2.-D (1.0 to 2.0Β kPa) and -E (2.5 and 3.0Β kPa).
    • Rafters: Tables 9.23.4.2.-F (1.0 to 2.0Β kPa) and -G (2.5 and 3.0Β kPa).
    • Built-up floor beams: Tables -H, -I and -J (supporting one, two or three floors). Glulam floor beams: Table -K.
    • Ridge beams and roof-only lintels: Table 9.23.4.2.-LOBC Div. B Table 9.23.4.2-L. Maximum Spans for Built-up Ridge Beams and Lintels Supporting the Roof and Ceiling Only – No. 1 or No. 2 Grade – Douglas Fir – Larch[4]Table 9.23.4.2.-L β€” Maximum Spans for Built-up Ridge Beams and Lintels Supporting the Roof and Ceiling Only – No. 1 or No. 2 Grade – Douglas Fir – Larch[4] Forming Part of Sentences 9.23.2.8.(1), 9.23.4.2.(4), 9.23.4.5.(1), 9.23.12.3.(1) and (3) and 9.23.14.10.(2) Beam or Lintel Size, mm | Specified Snow Load: 1.0…. Read the heading of each block, not just the table number. One table number often holds several blocks.
  3. For roofs, work out the specified snow load first (OBC Div. B 9.4.2.2.OBC Div. B 9.4.2.2. Specified Snow Loads(1) Except as provided in Sentences (2) and (4), specified snow loads shall be not less than those calculated using the following formula: S = C_bS_s + S_r where S = specified snow load, C_b = basic snow load roof factor, which is 0.45 where the entire width of a roof does not exceed 4.3 m and 0.55 for all other…): S = C_b Γ— S_s + S_r. Take S_s and S_r for the town from SB-1 Table 2OBC SB-1 Table 2: Climatic Design DataTable 2: Climatic Design Data Location | Elevation, m | Design Temperature β€” January β€” 2.5%, Β°C | Design Temperature β€” January β€” 1%, Β°C | Design Temperature β€” July 2.5% β€” Dry, Β°C | Design Temperature β€” July 2.5% β€” Wet, Β°C | Degree Days Below 18Β°C | 15 Min Rain, mm | One Day Rain, 1/50, mm | Annual Rain, mm | Moisture…. C_b is 0.45 when the entire roof width is 4.3Β m or less, and 0.55 for every other roof. S is never less than 1Β kPa.
  4. Choose the snow load block. The roof tables give 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0Β kPa. The joist and rafter tables say nothing about interpolating between loads, so use the block equal to S or the next one above it. Never round down.
  5. Find the row: species group (Douglas Fir-Larch, Hem-Fir, Spruce-Pine-Fir, Northern Species), then grade, then size.
  6. Find the column: spacing (300, 400 or 600Β mm o.c.) for joists and rafters; number of plies for built-up beams; snow load for Table -L; exterior or interior wall for lintels.
  7. Apply the notes. For beams, supported length is half the sum of the joist spans on both sides, and straight interpolation between supported lengths is allowed (Table 9.23.4.2.-HOBC Div. B Table 9.23.4.2-H. Maximum Spans for Built-up Floor Beams Supporting Not More than One Floor – 38 Γ— 184 mm MembersTable 9.23.4.2.-H β€” Maximum Spans for Built-up Floor Beams Supporting Not More than One Floor – 38 Γ— 184 mm Members Forming Part of Sentences 9.23.2.8.(1), 9.23.4.2.(3), 9.23.4.4.(3) and 9.23.8.1.(1) Commercial Designation | Grade | Supported Length, m | Size of Beam: 3 – 38 Γ— 184 mm | Size of Beam: 4 – 38 Γ— 184 mm |… Notes 3 and 4). Beam spans are clear spans; add two bearing lengths for the total length (Note 5). A concrete topping of not more than 51Β mm cuts beam spans to 0.8 times the table value (OBC Div. B 9.23.4.4.(3)OBC Div. B 9.23.4.4. Concrete Topping(1) Except as permitted in Sentence (2), where a floor is required to support a concrete topping, the joist spans shown Span Table 9.23.4.2.-A or the spacing of the members shall be reduced to allow for the loads due to the topping. (2) Where a floor is required to support a concrete topping, joist spans are permitted…). Table -L spans may go up 5%, 10% or 25% for short supported lengths (Note 1). Sawn lumber wall lintels may go up 5% or 10% when the supported rafter, joist and truss spans are short (Table 9.23.12.3.-COBC Div. B Table 9.23.12.3-C. Round a maximum span down, never up.
  8. Compare. The actual span must not exceed the table span. If it does, go up a size, close the spacing, or add plies.

Answer: 4 plies (3.40Β m ≀ 3.57Β m). The beam is at least 3.40 + 2 Γ— 0.076 = 3.552Β m long.

Common mistakes

  • Using the roof joist table (D or E) for rafters, or the reverse. At the same load, the roof joist spans are shorter.
  • Entering the roof table with S_s from SB-1 instead of the calculated S, or forgetting to add S_r.
  • Using C_b = 0.55 for a narrow porch roof (4.3Β m wide or less takes 0.45), or forgetting the 1Β kPa minimum.
  • Rounding S down to the lower snow block.
  • Reading the strapping block of Table 9.23.4.2.-A when the floor has bridging, or the reverse.
  • Taking the full joist span (or only the longer side) as the beam's supported length instead of half the sum of both sides.
  • Not interpolating between supported lengths when the note allows it, or rounding an interpolated span up.
  • Forgetting the 0.8 factor for a concrete topping on beams, or the bearing lengths when a total beam length is asked.
  • Applying the wrong percentage for short supported lengths on ridge beams and lintels.

(a)for distances from the roof step that are less than or equal to the drift length, x_d , calculated in accordance with Sentence (5), not less than 1.5 times the specified snow load, S, calculated using the formula in Sentence (1) with C_b equal to 0.55, and

(b)for distances from the roof step that are greater than the drift length, x_d , calculated in accordance with Sentence (5), as specified in Sentence (1).

(5)For the purposes of Sentence (4), the drift length, x_d , in m, shall be calculated as follows:

    x_rmd = 5(h - (0.55S_rms)/(Ξ³))

    where

h = height of the roof step, in m, and

Ξ³ = specific weight of snow as specified in Clause 9.4.2.1.(1)(f).

2.68 m | 3.00 m Notes to Table 9.23.4.2.-H: (1) Beam spans apply only where the floors serve residential areas as described in Table 4.1.5.3., or the uniformly distributed live load on the floors does not exceed that specified for residential areas as described in Table 4.1.5.3. (2) When the floors have a concrete topping of not more than 51 mm, the spans must be multiplied by 0.8. (3) Supported length means half the sum of the joists spans on both sides of the beam. (4) Straight interpolation may be used for other supported lengths. (5) Spans are clear spans between supports. For total span, add two bearing lengths. (6) 3-ply beams with supported lengths greater than 4.2 m require minimum bearing length of 114 mm. All other beams require minimum bearing length of 76 mm. (7) Includes Douglas Fir and Western Larch. (8) Includes Western Hemlock and Amabilis Fir. (9) Includes Spruce (all species except Coast Sitka Spruce), Jack Pine, Lodgepole Pine, Balsam Fir and Alpine Fir. (10) Includes any Canadian Species covered by the NLGA Standard Grading Rules.

(1)Except as permitted in Sentence (2), where a floor is required to support a concrete topping, the joist spans shown Span Table 9.23.4.2.-A or the spacing of the members shall be reduced to allow for the loads due to the topping.

(2)Where a floor is required to support a concrete topping, joist spans are permitted to be selected from Span Table 9.23.4.2.-B provided the concrete

    (a)is 38 to 51 mm thick,

    (b)is normal weight,

(c)is placed directly on the subflooring, and

(d)has not less than 20 MPa compressive strength after 28 days.

(3)Where a floor is required to support a concrete topping not more than 51 mm thick, the allowable beam spans shown in Span Tables 9.23.4.2.-H to 9.23.4.2.-K shall be multiplied by 0.8 or the supported length of the floor joists shall be reduced to allow for the loads due to the topping.

38 Γ— 286 | 1.66 | 1.35 Notes to Table 9.23.12.3.-C: (1) Where structural sheathing is used, lintel spans may be increased by 15%. Structural sheathing consists of a minimum 9.5 mm thick structural panel conforming to CSA O121, CSA O151, CSA O325 or CSA O437.0 fastened with at least two rows of fasteners to the exterior face of the lintel, and a single row to the top plates and studs. Fasteners shall conform to Table 9.23.3.5.-A. (2) A single piece of 89 mm thick lumber may be used in lieu of 2 pieces of 38 mm thick lumber on edge. (3) If floor joists span the full width of the building without support, lintel spans shall be reduced by 15% for β€œRoof, ceiling and 1 storey”, by 20% for β€œRoof, ceiling and 2 storeys”, and by 25% for β€œRoof, ceiling and 3 storeys”. (4) For ends of lintels fully supported by walls, provide minimum bearing length of 38 mm for lintel spans up to 3 m, or minimum bearing length of 76 mm for lintel spans greater than 3 m. (5) Spans for 0.6 m tributary width are calculated for lintels in end walls that support only a 0.6 m width of roof and ceiling, but do not support roof joists, roof rafters or roof trusses. (6) Lintel spans are calculated based on a maximum floor joist, roof joist or rafter span of 4.9 m and a maximum roof truss span of 9.8 m. Lintel spans may be increased by 5% if rafter and joist spans are not more than 4.3 m and roof truss spans are not more than 8.6 m. Spans may be increased by 10% if rafter and joist spans are not more than 3.7 m and roof trusses are not more than 7.4 m. (7) Spans apply only where the floors serve residential areas as described in Table 4.1.5.3., or the uniformly distributed live load does not exceed that specified for residential areas as described in Table 4.1.5.3.
